The act of burning and inhaling dried plant and herbal material for pleasure is probably as old as civilisation itself...Indeed the ability to make fire is considered one of the epoch markers of human development, so it only makes sense that social activity would evolve synchronous to our command and control of the illuminating flame. In eras gone by humans would huddle around an open fire to stay warm or cook food...Communally in order to survive.

Fire has always been a communal experience; both the pain it can bring and the pleasures it generates are all an element of the human experience. It’s not hard to imagine our ancient ancestors, while sitting around an open fire on a cold stormy night, coming up with the concept of passing a bowl or pipe full of burning pungent flavoursome (in some cases mind-altering) herbal material to warm the body and senses.

Visual representations of the act of smoking as well early smoking implements can be dated as far back as 5000 BC in the Peruvian and Ecuadorian Andes and was an integral element of shamanistic and tribal rituals. The burning of incense was common among the Chinese, Indians and Babylonians and whilst it was not being directly inhaled, the combination of fumes (sometimes laced with cannabis or opium) and ritual would create a spiritual as well as a mind altering effect.
